Mike was always willing to help and in 2023 he took over the reins of the CSO, very appropriately as he had arranged so many successful and enjoyable events for us at Patterdale and beyond. His work as Diocesan Organ Adviser for the north of the county occupied a good deal of his attention, resulting in significant projects in Penrith, Workington and the Eden Valley. Mike had been a geography teacher and House Master at Eton College, where he also played the organ in the Lower Chapel. His pupils included the likes of Boris Johnson, David Cameron and Princes William and Harry. He also taught martial arts and was himself an Aikido Black Belt. He introduced many students to hiking and climbing, most notably Bear Grylls, who became a close friend. Mike’s enthusiastic and energetic personality will be greatly missed by his family, friends and colleagues, to whom we extend our sincere condolences.

09/01/2026
There is a vacancy for an organist at St. Mary’s church, Kirkby Lonsdale. There is a fine 2 manual organ and a grand piano in this historic church. This position could suit an organist wanting to gain regular experience and further develop their skills on the instrument. The post involves playing for one service on Sunday, funerals and weddings. There is no choir. For further details please contact Anne Foulerton afoulerton@hotmail.com. A visit to the church and trial playing on the organ would be welcomed and encouraged.

05/11/2025
Our events programme for 2025 is now finished.
