This was a most enjoyable day despite the wet and windy weather which made the walk from the Cathedral to St. Aidan’s not at all pleasant. The event was attended by about twenty organists, some of whom had travelled from Edinburgh, others from various parts of the county. Three members from CSO attended this event.
At 09:30 we all assembled at the Cathedral where refreshments were available. Following this Andrew Cantrill-Fenwick gave a talk on improvisation with examples played on the organ. Andrew provided us with an overload of information about the art of improvising on the organ. After Andrew’s exposition we were split into three groups: A, B and C. Group A then went with Andrew up to the organ loft and he encouraged each person to try improvising to some very easy music that he had selected. I found that it wasn’t as simple as it looked.
Tom Bell took Group B to St. Aidan’s where the participants concentrated on pedalling. Group C went to St. Cuthbert’s with Andrew MacIntosh to have a session on the art of Hymn Playing.
At 12:30 we had an opportunity to socialise while eating our packed lunches in the Tithe Barn. At 13:45 it all began again. Each group had a lesson with the three tutors and chance to play on three very different organs. The day ended at 16:30.
