Review : Visit to Organs in Maryport : 12 October 2024

On 12th October four committee members and three other members met at St Mary’s Church in Maryport. Marjorie Harrison had arranged visits to the town’s two large Anglican churches, no more than a mile apart. Please refer to the September newsletter for details and specifications of the organs.

The Binns organ at St Mary’s was dedicated in 1933 with a recital by Dr.Wadely of Carlisle Cathedral, so it was appropriate that one of his postludes was included in the wide range of pieces played during the morning. The organ is a fine powerful instrument typical of its time but is in need of restoration if and when funds are available. Sadly the Tromba was one of the “prepared for but not installed” stops!

It was interesting to meet and talk to the Organist, Mr. McKendrey and also to note that one of his predecessors, Arthur Hirst was in post for 52 years from 1912 to 1964.

Lunch was arranged at the Golden Lion Hotel near the harbour and we enjoyed good food and lively discussion on a range of organ related subjects.

The afternoon visit was to All Souls, Netherton on the southern edge of the town, a lofty brick church dating from the late 19th century but now with the added benefit of a car park. This was possibly Maryport’s most prosperous time due to the development of the port, shipbuilding, coal mining and railways.

The two manual Conacher organ dates from 1900 and its sound is enhanced by the building’s acoustics. Members again enjoyed playing a variety of pieces. A small brass plaque on the choir stalls was in memory of a choir member who had served for 85 years!

We thank Marjorie for arranging these interesting visits and are grateful to the Vicar, Organists and church officers for allowing access to the two organs.
